In honor of our wonderful Mothers, 2nd grade students have been working on the writing process in the classroom through power writing to create a piece for their moms. Each of the students will use iMovie to create a short video for their moms. It will include a picture, a recording of their passage, a beginning and ending slide and accompanying music.

The children have created some amazing projects this year and I thought that we could use the time during this class to add new notes and upload a few things to their Evernote accounts. The classroom teachers can use their writing time to reflect on some of the projects that have taken place this year in and out of the classroom.
Our Personalized Learning Specialist has developed a model of reflection called RIP3 Reflection. The students are encouraged to use this to prompt them in the process.

Lesson: Stop Motion Animation
Date: Mar 26-April 3, 2014
What you will need...
Stop Motion App Paper for Framing and Objects The students will learn how to frame a picture, use the app to take images, manipulate the objects, upload their movie to iTunes.
Throughout the next several rotations, 2nd grade will be experimenting with Stop Motion Animation. For rotation #22, the students will play with an app called Stop Motion, and they will use objects around the room to create their own 20-30 frame animation movie. Stop motion is an animation technique to make objects appear as if they are moving on their own. This is done by moving the objects in small increments and taking a picture of it in a frame. It gives the illusion of movement when the images are played continuously together. This will lead into a project that we'll be collaborating with our art teacher...to come!

Lesson: Adding Images to a Presentation/Bibliography
Date: Feb 23-Mar 3, 2014
2nd Graders have completed their research, composed their presentation, added their content to their presentations and they are now ready to learn about adding images. The children will gather images from the online resources given to collect their information and decide where that image belongs in their presentation. Each image must reflect the title of the slide and fit in the space provided.
2nd Graders will learn about creating presentations today. In the past, I've used Haiku Deck, but this year, I'll expose the children to PPT for this project. We will learn the basics of understanding what a slide is, how to add new slides, changing the theme, adding titles with capital letters and saving our document to our folder on the network. This lesson will allow the students to have an understanding of how to use ppt, which in turn, will provide them with the knowledge to work in different presentation programs like Haiku Deck, Keynote and Prezi.
Students in 2nd Grade will begin to learn about their grassland animal. They will spend time researching the many aspects of the animal in the Idea Lab as well as during Media time. Students will use websites and books to complete the handout provided. This will be done for 1 rotation and there is possibility for more time if needed before starting the ppt presentation.

Lesson: Grasslands Research
Date: January 7-14, 2014
The students will gather in groups of 2 and complete the grassland research information. They will use the website provided and click on grassland facts to respond to the questions. This will enable the students to have enough background knowledge before starting their animal research.
The students will click on Grassland Facts to complete the research with a partner.
2nd Graders will continue to participate in Hour of Code and work through the tutorial provided by Hopscotch. The students have already completed exercises with this app, and will have enough prior knowledge to be able to master this activity.
The teacher will show the video while the students gather and follow the directions to complete the tutorial.

Lesson: Coding for Kids

Next week, around the nation, is Hour of Code. Students will be exposed to the fundamentals of code, it's purpose and basic functions. All of this will be done through the progression of different apps.
Students will learn about basic coding through Daisy the Dinosaur, Kodable and Hopscotch. The goal for them is that they understand that commands produce an action on a device.
Here is an example of two of my students in 4th grade sharing their experience with Hopscotch.

The students will listen to the story Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving and pay close attention to the illustrations. Each child will go to their folder and open the picture of their face.

Part 1:
What is a book review? Why are they important?
2nd Graders will learn about book reviews based on written web resources and videos. The students will gather in groups of 2-3 and read the book, discuss and fill in the book review template. They will think of the following things when writing their review.
The book’s title and author
A brief summary of the plot that doesn’t give away too much
Comments on the book’s strengths and weaknesses
The reviewer’s personal response to the book with specific examples to support praise or criticism
iMovie with the iPad Students will take 5-8 pictures of the book. Use the cropping tool in the photo editor and insert them into iMovie in the order of the book. Students will record their review over their pictures and insert music.

Lesson: Internet Safety- Know the Rules/Password Rap

* 2nd graders will navigate through the NetSmartzkids.org website and play some of the games and videos that support our internet safety unit.
We will discuss the importance of remembering the UYN Rules and how to create a Safe Password and the reasons why. We will also discuss the importance of keeping personal information private.
Activity: The children will learn about how to create a secure password with including numbers as letters. We will do an activity with our names, where numbers are included. We will guess who's name belongs to whom.

When you create a password, substitute a number where a letter would appear, according to the chart above. Some examples:

Today we will practice logging in with our new usernames and passwords for each classroom. We will review the dock and the browser that we will be using along with accessing www.linktolearning.net
2nd graders will be completing a survey that will help the 6th grade students learn about the Trinity community. They will answer questions about their favorite specials class, food, family and fun stuff that happens in school. All of this information is anonymous and will be used for looking at data. The 6th graders will use the data and create graphs representing the typical Trinity child.

QR stands for Quick Response, it is a trademark that automotive factories used to track and mark their vehicles. The code consists of black modules (square dots) arranged in a square pattern on a white background. When you scan it, information is read and stored. Mrs. Harris will introduce the lesson with "Where did Mrs. Harris go this summer?". The lesson is on the bulletin board. We will scan all of the codes and see where I went this summer!
